We typically perform bone grafting procedures for patients who are getting dental implants, but don’t have a strong enough jawbone to support the implant post. Alternately, patients may require bone grafts as part of their periodontal therapy.
During your bone grafting procedure, Dr. Rafaat or Dr. Emelee will transplant pieces of bone from another area in your jaw or other parts of your body into the part of the jawbone that is lacking density. If needed, our dentists can use artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank. We typically see the best results when we use bone grafts from the patient who is having the procedure, but the alternatives are available if the need arises. When the grafted bone adheres to the current bone structures, your jawbone can experience added density and strength.
